Creating a safe and secure learning environment is addressed in FJUHSD in many, varied ways.  Some of the strategies are as follows:  providing physical safety within school buildings and throughout the campus; providing easily accessible mental, social, and emotional health services; and insuring a sense of belonging to all students.

Technical Specifications

Wayfinding

  • Good wayfinding to the front door directing visitors to a single secure point of entry at the front office
  • Clear site lines  throughout each campus making supervision easier
  • ADA accessibility throughout the site and all buildings, including ramps, curb cuts, automatic door actuator and door widths

Technology

  • AED systems (Automated external defibrillator)
  • Communications system that allows for campus-wide & all classroom simultaneous announcements
  • surveillance camera system
  • badging building/campus access system, with electronic card key access
  • alarm system connected to emergency services that also provides immediate lockdown

Desired Adjacencies

  • Administration office at front entry, with views of approach and parking areas if possible

Special Considerations

  • Transparency into spaces yet providing areas of refuge
  • warm & welcoming spaces

Site

  • clear vehicular circulation, separating cars, buses, bicycles and pedestrians
  • on-site parking as much as possible
  • lighted crosswalks for off-site parking & pedestrians
  • strategic use of fencing to secure the site
  • adequate exterior night lighting throughout campus and parking lots

  • easily supervisable restrooms open to passive supervision, with shared areas (selective locations-not all restrooms)
  • Restroom and concessions facilities on each side of stadium to separate the two opposing teams' spectators, including a separate gated entry where possible
  • variety of volume of spaces, with nooks for self regulation and calming
  • Ability to display work, murals, and other student-led artworks to provide sense of belonging and reduce possible vandalism and graffiti
  • Confidential counseling and mental health provider offices to meet with students
  • Wellness center/area for students to go and self-regulate
